2013 - Editing of autobiography: Bazzu Giovanni. La mia vita in un batter d'occhio. Youcanprint ed.
Giovanni was attacked by a terrible illness, and resisted for about 4 years, then he left us. During his struggle, he revealed a great narrator of his personal stories, as well as old local histories he was very fond of. I helped a bit in the editing process for his first book of memories.

Sooner or later, if you deal with Japanese culture, you'll stumble into manga or anime. A couple of volumes were my only experience in manga translation. A very interesting work, though a highly demanding one, with much stuff to learn (e.g., translating noises...). The timing was very tight, and I think there was room for improving my practice as translator. Good to know for possible future experiences. Thanks to Ozumi Asuka for giving me the chance to try this.

2010 - Seminar: "I doni del mare: un percorso di storia, cibo e arte nell'isola di Sardegna - 海の恵み:サルデーニャ島の歴史、食、芸術をめぐる旅", at LinguaViva school of Italian language in Tōkyō.
This seminar on coastal Sardinia, prepared in collaboration with Alessandra Corda, was a good success, since, among the many places of Italy visited by Japanese, Sardinia remains the less known, therefore there was much curiosity about it. Thanks to Carla Formisano and Marco Sbaragli of LinguaViva, for proposing us this seminar and supporting us with their enthusiasm and reliability.

2008-2009 - Internship at Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Tōkyō.
I arrived at the Institute as trainee financed by Regione Autonoma della Sardegna through the "Master and Back" project, then I stayed a bit longer by participating to a research project on the history of the Institute. My whole work there, mostly dealing with the organisation of cultural events, was very intense and frequently hectic. It also offered a good chance to practice writing (mails, leaflets, messaging, cataloguing etc.). The most demanding task was my participation to the writing of a new edition of a monograph: Sica Maria & Verde Antonio, 1999, Breve storia dei rapporti culturali italo-giapponesi e dell'Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Tokyo, Ravenna: Longo. The new edition was published in 2012 both in Japanese and Italian: AAVV, Storia dell'Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Tōkyō, Tōkyō: Istituto Italiano di Cultura (Japanese ed.: 『イタリア文化会館の歴史』).

2009 - English>Italian translation and Proofreading of: Zene Cosimo. Dialoghi nulesi. Nuoro: ISRE.
Danish anthropologist Andreas Fridolin Weis Bentzon (1936-1971)'s notes on Nule are kept at ISRE (Istituto Superiore Regionale Etnografico) of Sardinia, which created the Bentzon Fund. Anthropologist Cosimo Zene, Senior Lecturer at SOAS (University of London) catalogued the fund and published Dialoghi nulesi: a multilayered work, at the same time a guide to Bentzon and his work on Nule, a way to continue it, and an act of love for Nule people. I was involved in this work by Cosimo, and was in charge of the English>Italian translation of the core part of the Fund, numerous excerpts of which are published in this monograph. I also participated to the editing work of this book. Cosimo Zene, fostering a dialogic approach to writing, involved me and Tullio Lobetti in the process of reading, commenting the work, as well as contributing to its editing. This might sound ordinary, but… How many established University teachers and/or writers would give their draft writings to younger, less experienced researchers, asking fot opinions? A few words of praise and gratitude to Cosimo for his open-mindedness, bravery, and kindness. My gratitude also goes to ISRE and to his director, Paolo Piquereddu, for offering me this job.

2009 - Article:「イタリア・サルデーニャ島における情報技術利用と図書館」("Using information technology in Sardinia island, Italy", Jap. tr. by Sayaka Kobayashi and Masako Toyoda). 『図書館雑誌』(The Library Journal) 103(3).
With this article, written for the magazine of the Japan Library Association (日本図書館雑誌) under request of Toyoda Masako, head-librarian at the Italian Cultural Institute in Tōkyō, I introduce some internet projects carried forward in recent years by Sardinian public institutions, with the aim of spreading Sardinian culture. These projects can have great relevance in Sardinia, which, due to its unfavourable geographical position, in past times tended to be isolated from national and international flows of information.

2007 and 2004 - Sèmita Project.
This project, prepared in collaboration with Ivan Ponsano and Alessandra Coda, aimed to create a network of trekking paths for San Teodoro's territory in northern Sardinia. It was proposed to the local town hall, with no success. I still share, however, the attitude pervading this idea: using the knowledge of a territory for active interventions in local societies.

I was invited by Prof. Giovanni La Guardia (Università "L'Orientale", Naples) to a meeting dedicated to Michele Ranchetti (1925-2008) and to literary translation, held at "L'Orientale" in 2002. On that occasion I discussed some practical problems of translation from Japanese language. This article resulted out of that experience.

2006 - Article on Civiltà del mare (Sea Civilizations):
- "Una donna di Oviddé: la scoperta di un atto notarile inedito del 1796" (year 16, n.1): In Nuoro State Archive I stumbled into this old testament, a rather rare document for San Teodoro, usually quite poor of archival documents. Thanks to this document, I reconstructed a woman's hard life in 18th Century rural Sardinia.
- "Foreste e carbonai in Gallura: il caso di San Teodoro" (year 16, n.2-3-4): Working with archival documents and collecting interviews with elderlies, all focused on the story of local forests, I wrote a piece of the history of San Teodoro's environment, meanwhile reflecting on perceptions and memories of the locals.
2005-2006 - Teacher of Japanese language at Centro Linguistico di Ateneo, Università di Cagliari (Italy).
I arranged courses, tutored students and prepared exams. In those years I also created a mailing list dedicated to Japanese events in Sardinia.

2005 - Italian>English translation of article: Usai Emanuela, "Models of state organisation in 'other' cultures". The European Union Review 10(2).
Did you know that in the very beginning of modern North America history the contacts between the first pilgrims from Europe and the natives were much more egalitarian than they would ever be later? Possibly, the very theoretical foundations of US government have been influenced by the preexisting native Americans' confederation system... This is what I discovered in this article by Emanuela Usai, at the time achieving her Dottorato in Storia Moderna e Contemporanea at Università degli Studi di Cagliari. This fascinating article was published on The European Union Review, edited by Centro Studi sull'Unione Europea of Università degli Studi di Pavia.

Le cooperative casearie in Sardegna: modelli teorici, verifiche empiriche e casi di studio (Dairy cooperatives in Sardinia: theoretical models, empirical testings and case studies). Milano: Franco Angeli.
This is a collection of essays on cheese-making cooperatives in Sardinia. The editor was Daniele Porcheddu, now ricercatore universitario (assistant professor) in Economics and Management at Università degli Studi di Sassari. I translated an article by Mexican anthropologist Gabriela Vargas-Cetina, which focuses on a dairy cooperative of a city in the Nuoro province, called with the fictitious name of Bardia. Many thanks to Daniele, a good old friend, who asked me to work on this translation.

2004 - Italian>English and English>Italian translation and interpreting.
Every summer Sardinian music festival "Time in Jazz" attracts people from all over Italy to the town of Berchidda. Great international selection of jazz musicians; jams and concerts a bit everywhere in town and around; good local wine. Paolo Fresu, one of the most renowned Italian jazz musicians, is the key figure behind this. The 2004 edition was dedicated to "La follia" (madness). I volunteered as "tour assistant" of Dave Douglas and his Vacation Blues band. I also occasionally proofread English texts. Thanks to Alessandra Corda and Gianni Menicucci for involving me into this experience.

2004 - Italian-English-Japanese translation and interpreting in a course on "Approccio all'analisi sensoriale degli olii vergini di oliva", organised by ERSAT (Regional Institute of Agricultural Development and Support, now LAORE) in Siniscola (Sardinia).
Here I learnt that: 1. the art of tasting olive oil is as refined and complex as wine-tasting; 2. in Central Eastern Sardinia, Baronie area, there is an active group of producers of organic food, such as honey, bread, wine, dairy products, as well as, of course, oil. Thanks to Paolo Basoni, working at then ERSAT office in Budoni city, for involving me in this project.

2003 - Japanese>Italian translation of a short tale: "Una pagina folle", in Kawabata Yasunari. Romanzi e racconti. Milano: Mondadori.
I own a special debt of gratitude to Giorgio Amitrano, editor of this selection of Kawabata's masterworks, who decided to insert one of my translations into this Meridiani book. Una pagina folle (『狂った一頁』) is a little gem among Kawabata's first works: the screenplay of the homonymous film, shot in 1926, by Kinugasa Teinosuke (1896-1982). The story describes the grim life conditions in a Japanese asylum. One of the patients is the wife of the old warden. She went crazy after the loss of their child, and now he tends her, desperately hoping for her recovery. The screenplay by Kawabata, written in a quick and dry style, is compellingly emotional. The movie shot after this text, with its expressive visual imagery and innovative shooting techniques, is considered one of the most interesting avantgarde productions of that period.

2001 - English-Italian translation at the meeting "Arte e Storia: sulle tracce dei Bizantini nell'Italia centro-meridionale e nelle isole, organised by Comet Sas of Cagliari and held in Budoni (Sardinia), 6-8 December.
The history of Byzantine domination in Sardinia is fascinating and quite mysterious. This meeting focused on possible archaeological remains of that period in the north-eastern part of Sardinia. Among my works for this conference, my English>Italian translation (unfortunately unpublished) of a text by Prof. Charles Stewart (University College London, Department of Anthropology): "Dream incubation and the end of ancient Greek religion". Thanks to Giusi Gradoli of Comet Sas and Prof. Emilia Gramigna for involving me in this project.

During my MA studies at SOAS (more details below) we formed a little group of enthusiastic and active persons (Cristina Brecciaroli, Eliana Ferraris, Elena Moreddu, Lucy Nabijou, Monica Vidili, and me; webdesign by Afshin Nabijou), and founded Local Voices, a web-magazine mostly dedicated to socio-anthropological issues, which lasted three spectacular issues. Shame it is not available anymore on the net, since its contents were rather good. I'd like to remember here the third issue (2001), which was focused on social memory and identity, among my favourite topics of research. I contributed, among other things, with two articles:

1998 - Article: "La Shinkankakuha: un movimento d'avanguardia nel Giappone degli anni '20". Il Giappone 38.
Prof. Adolfo Tamburello, at that time teaching at "L'Orientale", as well as editor of Il Giappone, was chairing the "Laurea" committee during my thesis discussion, and decided to support this publication, which mostly derive from my dissertation (see below). There are delicate moments, like the completion of a degree, in which you feel that you did put an end to something, but have no precise idea yet of what you might do with that. The presence of somebody enjoying your work and encouraging you to keep going on is fundamental, and that's why I own a debt of gratitude to Adolfo Tamburello and to Prof. Giovanni La Guardia.

Dissertation thesis: Shinkankakuha: un movimento giapponese d'avanguardia negli anni '20 (A japanese avant-garde movement in the Twenties). I did put a lot of effort into this thesis, dedicated to a classic avant-garde group of early 20th Century: the Shinkankakuha (New Perceptionists), active in late '20s. Some of them became very famous (e.g. Kawabata Yasunari and Yokomitsu Riichi). I translated a lot of stuff in this thesis, and luckily managed to publish some of it in the following years (see other sections of this website). Many thanks to my first supervisor Emanuele Ciccarella (Japanese Literature), and to my second supervisor, Giovanni La Guardia (Sociology of Literature).

1997 - Editing and writing of Pangenda 1997, the first diary for students published at "L'Orientale" University.
I was back from my Erasmus experience in England, and I was struck by the high level of organization of student unions. They even produced a University diary, with opening times of libraries and offices, main deadlines etc. I proposed this idea to "Pangea", a student association we funded in 1995. The task revealed difficult for the library section. L'Orientale had a maze of libraries scattered around Naples, with no unifying text to guide the students, so we had to build the guide up from scratch.
